Nov. 26—A fundraising ball with roots dating back to before statehood set a record last weekend, bringing in more than $1 million for STEM education.
The Montezuma Ball, which started more than 100 years ago as the New Mexico Territorial Fair, raised money this year for R4Creating, a Rio Rancho company that supports organizations to increase science, technology, engineering and math programs for students, such as robotics teams.
Eclipsing $1 million marked a record for the longstanding event.

Shelly Gruenig, the R4Creating founder and executive director, thanks the sponsors and volunteers who made the record possible.
“Breaking the fundraising record means we are now able to work with even more young people and are well on our way to developing our permanent campus,” she said.
Since 2000, the Montezuma Ball has raised millions of dollars for non-profit organizations, including DreamSpring, WESST, Animal Humane of New Mexico, Explora and others.
Plans for next year’s ball are already taking shape. Mandy’s Farm, which serves people with intellectual and development disabilities, will be the primary beneficiary.
“The challenge has been set, and we are up for it,” said Melissa McCue, Mandy’s Farm executive director. “We hope to break R4Creating’s record next year, which also happens to be our 25th anniversary.”
