Apple’s new iOS 18.2 fixes one of the most annoying things about Photos

Apple’s new iOS update 18.2 has been welcomed by users as it rolls back a widely disliked change in the Photos app.

The new update, which rolled out on Tuesday, offers multiple changes to the iPhone and iPad operating system. Included is a change to Photos which returns the app to how it was before the introduction of a redesign in iOS 18.

Key among these is a change to the way iPhone videos play – a function which commenters on the Apple forums and on social media had previously described as ‘broken’ and ‘terrible’.

The update also introduces a number of ‘Apple Intelligence’ features for the first time for UK users – although to enjoy these, users need an iPhone 15 Pro or later.

The update will be available to iOS users as a free download, with Apple often scheduling updates for 3pm UK time.

The new update rolls back a widely reviled change in iOS 18, where videos first play with white borders and users have to tap to play in full screen.

Techradar published an article in September (“Hate the new iOS 18 Photos app?”) showing users how to “fix” the issue, while Forbes branded it “frustrating” for millions of users.

The change meant that it was difficult to control videos, and was described as the ‘most annoying’ feature of iOS 18 by posters on social media.

Following the latest update, videos now play in full-screen by default, and users can tap to hide interface elements.

Other changes include a new ability to turn off looping videos (it’s found in Settings > Photos) alongside an easier way to navigate the ‘front page’ of Photos by swiping to go ‘Back’.

Simply swipe right from the left side of the screen to go back, as in other Apple apps (in iOS 18, you previously had to tap a back button in top left).

The new update also adds frame-by-frame video scrubbing and the option to delete history in Photos (both in Recently Viewed and Recently Shared).

The new update brings many Apple Intelligence features to UK users for the first time.

To use these, you’ll need either an iPhone 16 or last year’s 15 Pro or Pro Max.

These include Image Playground, a new app which generates pictures from text prompts, and Genmoji, AI-generated emojis including ones based on photos of friends or family.

There’s also a suite of generative AI improvements to current apps, such as Writing Tools which helps to proofread and improve text.

Notifications are now ordered by what’s important, chosen by AI, with a summary delivered if users receive dozens per day.

Users of iPhone 16 can also use new ‘Visual Intelligence’ which can translate signs and recognise objects.
