A two-year-old boy has died and four adults injured in a hit-and-run crash involving a stolen car.
West Midlands Police said all five people were in a Toyota Auris when it was hit by a stolen Porsche Cayenne in Smethwick, Birmingham, on Saturday night.
The driver of the Porsche then fled the scene, police said.
The child and four adults were taken to hospital, where the two-year-old died. Two of the adults, a woman and a man aged 29 and 30, remain in a serious condition, while another man and woman, both 30, are stable, police said.
What we know
Officers were called to Dartmouth Road in Smethwick, Birmingham, after the incident just before 11pm on Saturday, West Midlands Police said.
The force said a Porsche Cayenne – which had been stolen earlier this month – was involved in a crash with a Toyota Auris which was carrying four adults and a boy, aged two.
All of them were taken to hospital, where the boy died.
A woman aged 29 and a 30-year-old man remain in a serious condition while another man and woman, both aged 30, are described as stable, police confirmed.
The driver of the grey Porsche fled the scene, the force added.
The road was closed in both directions while officers examined the scene but has since reopened.
Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes from West Midlands Police’s serious collision investigation unit (SCIU), said: âOur thoughts remain with the family of the little boy at this extremely difficult time. I would urge the driver of the Porsche to do the right thing and come and talk to us.
âThey made the wrong decision to run away and Iâm asking them now to make the right one.
âI also want to appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision and hasnât already spoken to us, or has CCTV or dashcam footage to get in touch.â
What we don’t know
The exact circumstances of the crash are not yet known, though police reportedly believe the Porsche was driving away from the roundabout on Kenrick Way when the crash took place.
According to some reports, video suggest that the crash was a head-on collision though this has not officially been confirmed.
The identity of the boy who died has not been revealed, nor have the injuries sustained by the adults in the car.
We also don’t know where the Porsche Cayenne involved in the crash had been stolen from, and exactly when or the circumstances.
Is speeding an issue in the area?
According to the BBC, West Bromwich MP Sarah Coombes, spoke in Parliament on 27 November about speeding on Kenrick Way – where the Porsche had believed to be driving from when the crash happened – saying local residents “dread” Friday and Saturday nights.
We know dangerous driving happens on a huge scale; we see it on every journey. We also know that a car is stolen every 8 mins in the UK.
We say as a society we donât tolerate it.
But these are the results of a collective failure to seriously tackle it.https://t.co/EaXT0STPr1
