Dec. 15, 1905: “The Indiana Railway company, which controls the city street railway lines in South Bend, Mishawaka, Elkhart and Goshen, Ind., and the interurban systems between these points, and the South Bend, Laporte & Michigan City Railway company, which controls the city lines at Michigan City, Ind., the big interurban belt now in the process of construction between South Bend and Laporte, Ind., the line now operating from Laporte to Michigan City have been consolidated. The merger will be known in the future as the Northern Indiana Railway company, the change becoming effective at once.” — The South Bend Tribune

Dec. 16, 1914: “The plans for a municipal Christmas tree have been perfected, and Mishawaka is assured a municipal tree and appropriate exercises which will carry the Christmas spirit and cheer over the city on Christmas Eve, and throughout the entire week.” — The South Bend Tribune

Dec. 17, 1929: “The Christmas rush of mail that was expected to reach its climax to-day and Wednesday, has not arrived, Postmaster John N. Hunter announced to-day. The weighing station in the lobby of the South Bend postoffice this morning was idle and clerks who were added to the postoffice staff for the pre-Christmas business, were standing about waiting for packages to come in.” — The South Bend Tribune

Dec. 18, 1937: “The Indiana secretary of state has approved an application by Robertson Bros. Department Store, Inc., to increase the company’s number of preferred stock shares from 1,500 to 2,500, thereby increasing working capital from $150,000 to $250,000, Will Welber, president of the store announced today. ‘This additional capital,’ Mr. Welber said, ‘will be used for purposes of modernizing the store further.’” — The South Bend Tribune

Dec. 19, 1944: “A hearty Christmas day dinner for the aged and needy residents of Mishawaka has been assured by the Salvation Army as the result of a two-day fund raising campaign put on by that institution through the cooperation of the Mishawaka Lions club. Members of the Lions club in operating the Salvation Army kettles in the downtown business districts on Friday and Saturday raised $846.21, President John W. Barnard announced today.” — The South Bend Tribune

Dec. 20, 1959: “A University of Notre Dame senior is one of four Midwest college students awarded Rhodes Scholarships on Saturday. Dennis Shaul, a senior history major, was named one of the winners during the final competition for this region which was held in Chicago. Shaul, a native of Akron, O., will begin post graduate study at Oxford University, England, next fall.” — The South Bend Tribune

Dec. 21, 1965: “A contract for 59 ovens totaling $28,025 has been awarded by the Defense General Supply Center, Richmond, Va., to South Bend Range Corp., 201 South Cherry St. The ovens are for use by the armed forces. The Defense General Supply Center is a field command of the Defense Supply Agency (DSA).” — The South Bend Tribune
