A man suspected in his 106-year-old grandmother’s death last month in northeast Amarillo is now charged with murder following further investigation into the incident, the Amarillo Police Department announced Monday.
APD said officers responded to a call Nov. 26 in the 3800 block of Northeast 14th Street regarding the death of Cecilia Ferguson, 106, who resided at that location with her grandson, Michael Alexander Ferguson, 35.
“Upon arriving at the scene, officers noted suspicious circumstances surrounding Ms. Ferguson’s death,” an update states. “As a result, the APD Homicide Unit was called to take over the investigation.”

Michael Ferguson was interviewed by APD homicide investigators during the course of the investigation, and although police said he denied any involvement in his grandmother’s death, he was subsequently arrested and booked into the Potter County Detention Center on charges of injury to the elderly.
APD said on Monday, Dec. 23, following further investigation, APD homicide investigators upgraded the charge against Michael Ferguson to murder. A warrant issued by the Potter County District Attorney’s Office alleges that Michael Ferguson caused the death of Cecilia Ferguson, and he remains in custody at the Potter County Detention Center.
Police did not elaborate on what may have led to Cecilia Ferguson’s death.
The investigation is still ongoing. Anyone with additional information regarding this case is urged to contact the APD Homicide Unit at 806-378-9468.
