From the Archives: Dec. 25 in the Pioneer

Dec. 25—December 25, 2014 — Sanford Bemidji Medical Center is restricting visitors in response to a flu outbreak throughout Minnesota. The outbreak of influenza is widespread and on pace to eclipse last year’s 1,540 hospitalizations statewide. Only two visitors are allowed per patient and all visitors are encouraged to wear a mask.

December 25, 1999 — Louis Jenkins, coordinator of the annual Community Holiday Meal, said volunteers collected about 50 gifts by Christmas Eve Day, but 163 people were expected, along with 100 meal deliveries. Later that day, a mother-daughter volunteer team came together and delivered 400-600 presents from local people and businesses.

December 25, 1974 — St. Philip’s Church is preparing to put on a production of the opera, “Amahl and the Night Visitors,” featuring singers from the Bemidji State College choir. The opera, originally composed for NBC television, tells the story of a shepherd boy and his mother who are visited by the Wisemen on their way to Bethlehem.

December 25, 1924 — Basketball fans will have the opportunity to see the Bemidji High School team in action against members of former Bemidji High School teams at an upcoming alumni game. Admission for the game has been set at 25 cents and it is expected that a large crowd of students and the general public will turn out.
