MOANALUA, Hawaii (KHON2) — Those who use the H1 Freeway for their daily commute are no strangers to the digital message boards posted in the most heavily trafficked areas.

On Sunday, Dec. 29, drivers an unauthorized message posted on one of the boards left drivers shocked and prompted an investigation led by Hawaii Department of Transportation officials.

Groups seeing uptick in animal deaths due to fireworks
The incident happened in the afternoon hours on Moanalua Freeway near Moanalua Gardens.
Officials said the sign has been disabled and will be reset with safety messaging.
There are multiple digital message boards around the island, used to alert drivers of roadwork and remind people to drive safely.
