Multiple drivers arrested in ‘illegal takeovers’ of Charlotte, Lake Norman-area roads

Troopers arrested five men and a teenager and seized six trucks during what authorities called an illegal street takeover near Lake Norman in Mooresville on Monday.

It was the latest in a string of the gatherings across the area the past several days, including in Charlotte, where an officer was injured. Street takeovers typically involve people blocking traffic at an intersection while cars do burnouts and donuts.

“These dangerous activities not only disrupt our neighborhoods but also endanger lives,” Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said in a statement. “We remain committed to keeping our streets safe and will continue to crack down on illegal street takeovers.”

Responding to reports of “careless and reckless” driving, troopers on Monday found the 400 block of Barfield Road “completely blocked” at 5:10 p.m. by the takeover, according to a North Carolina State Highway Patrol news release.

Troopers arrested and filed charges of careless and reckless driving, street takeover and injury to real property against Eli Chance Pharr, 18, of Stony Point; Gage Myquea Angel Jr., 20, of Cleveland; Isaiah Antonio Villegas, 27, of Statesville; Nicholas James Lufkin, 20, of Mooresville; Nathaniel Madison Harris, 27, of Statesville; and the teen.

The Highway Patrol thanked the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office for its assistance.

Charlotte street takeovers

The arrests followed 10 street takeover “pop-up events” across Charlotte over the weekend, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department news release on the social media site X late Monday afternoon.

A TikTok video with about 500,000 views by the user @chanelle_e33 appeared to show one such takeover in uptown, with a car doing donuts as fireworks shot off. The person who posted the video said the street takeover lasted about 20 minutes before police showed up.

An officer was hurt trying to stop a driver leaving one of the takeovers, police said. Charlotte firefighters treated the officer at the scene, and the officer kept working, CMPD said.

Police arrested two people on possession of stolen vehicle charges and one person on a charge of resisting, delaying or obstructing an officer.

Police seized a firearm, a stolen car and two other vehicles in the takeovers and issued four citations for spectating a street takeover and one citation for for participating in a street takeover.

The driver fleeing one of the takeovers caused minor damage to two patrol cars, police said.

Further details about the Charlotte takeovers weren’t released.
