Milwaukee could see up to 5 inches of snow Monday; winter weather advisory ended

Drivers traveling south through Kenosha should expect a slower evening commute due to lake effect snow showers, according to the National Weather Service.

Blowing and drifting snow will impact eastern Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha counties over the next few hours. Visibility dropping to 1 mile could be possible, according to the NWS.

Snow storm totals could reach up to 8 inches in eastern Racine and Kenosha counties, said NWS meteoroglist Taylor Patterson Monday afternoon.

Kenosha had about four inches of snow on the ground as of 2 p.m. with snow fall totals increasing until about 6 p.m. Monday, Patterson said.

As of 2 p.m., Milwaukee saw under an inch of snow near the airport, but portions of the southern part of the county could accumulate several more inches by the evening, depending on proximity to the lakefront, said Patterson.

A Winter Weather Advisory ended in Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha counties at 3 p.m. Forecasters expect highs on Monday in the mid 20s with overnight lows around 12 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service, lake effect snow happens when cold air moves across the water of the Great Lakes, including Lake Michigan. As the air passes over unfrozen waters, warmth and moisture move into the lowest portion of the atmosphere.

Then the air rises and clouds form and grow into narrow bands down wind of the lake that make two to three inches of snow per hour. The direction of the wind determines which area will receive lake effect snow. Snow could be falling in one area, and the sun may be shining just a mile or two away in either direction.
