MassBay staff member inspires award-winning T-shirt promoting American Sign Language

WELLESLEY — A MassBay Community College staff member has inspired a T-shirt initiative to promote inclusion and raise awareness about the deaf community.

Lisa Dunn, a Sherborn resident who is deaf, has worked with the college’s admissions team since 2014, the college said in a press release. Her idea for the T-shirt came after attending a Worcester Red Sox game during the team’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing Awareness Night. She purchased a T-shirt featuring the WooSox logo in American Sign Language, then shared her idea with colleagues.

“It was important to show the students and the wider community that MassBay is a place where everyone belongs,” Dunn said in a statement. “We offer ASL classes, interpreters for deaf students, and employ deaf staff like me. We are an inclusive community, and I thought, why not celebrate that on a T-shirt?”

The MassBay ASL T-shirt spells out “MassBay” in ASL across the front, with the college logo on one sleeve and the phrase “I love you” in ASL on the other. The shirts have sparked conversations about the college, Dunn said.

Last fall, MassBay’s marketing and communications team submitted the ASL T-shirt to the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations District 1 Medallion Awards. Competing in the “logo wear” category, the T-shirt earned MassBay a Gold Medallion Award, the highest honor. One judge commented: “Sometimes you just see something, and it is just wow. This is WOW! Great job.”

Dunn attended Newton North High School and holds a degree from California State University at Northridge.
