WORCESTER ― A Worcester roofing business owner has agreed to plead guilty to concealing $1.6 million from the IRS.
According to a news release from the Department of Justice, Jake Miller, 42, of Worcester, will plead guilty to one count of tax evasion. A plea hearing has not been scheduled by the court, according to the Thursday release.
The Justice Department reported that Miller allegedly was running a roofing company, Kostas Roofing, while conducting business under the pseudonym Paul Kostas. From 2013 to 2021, Miller allegedly cashed the checks that he received by customers for his roofing service and then deposited the money into his personal bank accounts.

Justice Department investigators alleged that Miller received at least $1.6 million from his roofing business and did not file income tax returns for any of the years between 2013 and 2021. By doing so, Miller evaded approximately $450,000 in taxes.
Under federal law, the penalty for tax evasion comes with a maximum prison sentence of five years, and a fine up to double the gross gain or loss from the evasion. In the case of Miller, that could be a fine as large as $900,000.
