MANITOWOC – Only 9% of Manitowoc County voters turned in a ballot for the spring primary election Tuesday.

Manitowoc County Clerk Jessica Backus said she believes the cold kept voters from turning out, along with the low number of races on the ballot in most districts.

All Manitowoc school board candidates are moving forward to the spring election except Michael Retzinger.

According to unofficial results from the Manitowoc County Clerk’s Office, Ann Holsen received 1,973 votes, David Bowman received 1,880, Mary Lofy Blahnik received 1,639, Lisa Ann Krueger received 880, Brayden Myer received 793, Chrystal Myer received 782 and Retzinger received 774.

Holsen, Bowman, Blahnik, Krueger, Brayden Myer and Chrystal Myer will be listed on the spring ballot for the three open seats on the Manitowoc school board.

These totals are unofficial until a Board of Canvassers reviews and authenticates the ballots.

In the race for Manitowoc Common Council District 1 alderperson, Andrew Dunbar and Brett Vanderkin will move on to the spring ballot.

According to the unofficial tally, Dunbar received 115 votes while Vanderkin received 91. Ray Geigel received 57 and will not be moving on to the spring election.

For the two town of Cooperstown supervisor seats, Nick Propson received 79 votes, Anthony Shibler received 74, Hank Kouba received 47, Patrick Hickey received 44 and Ed Berndt Jr. received 32. Propson, Shibler, Kouba and Hickey will move on to the spring ballot for the two open seats.

For the town of Gibson chairperson, Steven Rahmlow received 86 votes, Steven Zeitler received 60 and Richard Wegner received 42. Rahmlow and Zeitler will move on to the spring ballot in April.

For the town of Manitowoc Rapids supervisor, Thomas Wetenkamp received 128 votes, Jim Webb received 68 and Tim Archambeau received 64. Wetenkamp and Webb will move on to the spring ballot.

Those races will join the races for Manitowoc mayor and more on the spring ballot for April 1. Here’s a look at the top contested races in Manitowoc County.

  • Incumbent Justin Nickels is running against challenger Jason Prigge.

  • District 1: Incumbent Brett Vanderkin is running against challenger Andrew Dunbar.

  • District 3: Incumbent Michael Cummings is running against challenger Angela Myers.

  • Incumbents Scott Stechmesser, Bill LeClair and Tim Petri are running against challengers Jeff Dahlke and Andre Robitaille for three open seats.

  • Incumbents Matthew Phipps, Matthew Spaulding and Tony Vlastelica are not running for another term. David Bowman, Mary Lofy Blahnik, Ann Holsen, Lisa Anne Krueger, Brayden Myer and Chrystal Myer are competing for three open seats.

  • Incumbents Lori Zimney, Gary Shavlik, Jennifer Henrickson and Tim Klinkner are running against challenger Katherine Dahlke for four open seats.

How do I register to vote?

People can register to vote in person at their municipal clerk’s office or online at myvote.wi.

To register, people will need to provide proof of residence in the form of their driver’s license, a bank statement, utility bill, etc.

Once a voter is registered, they can request an absentee ballot be mailed to them if they wish.
