Motorists urged to make one simple update to avoid hefty DVLA fine

Drivers are being urged to make simple and quick changes to avoid getting fines. Motoring experts from the driving test app, @drivingtestsuccess, say that you need to do it or the fine is a hefty one.

In their video, one of their experts say: “You must inform the DVLA if your address changes so they can update your details – whether that’s on your provisional license or your driving licence.”

They stress that this is free – so there’s no excuse. “This will not cost you anything, and you can still drive whilst waiting for your new licence to arrive”, they explain.

As well as updating your licence, they say that you need to update other crucial documents too – and some you may not know about.

They warn: “You must also update your address on your vehicle logbook, your vehicle tax, and your personalised registration document if you have a private plate.”

Concluding their video, they reveal: “If you do not inform the DVA of an address change, you could be charged up to £1,000. So it’s really important to keep those details up-to-date.”

How do I tell the DVLA my new address?

You can do it via the GOV.UK website here. It says that if you move to a new permanent address, you need to tell it. However: “You do not need to tell us if you move temporarily (for example you’re living away at university) if we can still contact you at your permanent address.”

If you want to change your name at the same time, you’ll have to apply by post.

To change this information, you will need:

your driving licence
to be a resident of Great Britain – there’s a different process in Northern Ireland
to give the addresses you’ve lived at in the last 3 years
to not be banned from driving

The government website notes that you will also need to provide your driving licence number, national insurance number and passport number, if you know them.
