When it comes to the college search, safety is at the top of the list for just about every parent. And luckily for those in North Jersey, one of the safest college towns in the nation can be found right here.
Madison, a small suburban community in southeast Morris County, was named the third safest college town in the United States in a recent ranking by Research.com, a website that analyzes school data.
The town — which is home to two universities, Fairleigh Dickinson and Drew — earned its ranking for its relatively low crime rates, based on FBI statistics. With about 16,000 total residents, Madison had a violent crime rate of 0.2 incidents for every 1,000 people according to the report, which used 2018 data. It also had a property crime rate of 4.8 incidents per 1,000 people.
