Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen shares reaction to being called ‘total prat’ in Tesco

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen has revealed a builder called him a “total prat” to his face while he was shopping in Tesco.

The Changing Rooms star said the man came up to him at the supermarket after being won over by his appearance in the new Netflix survival show, Celebrity Bear Hunt.

Llewelyn-Bowen, 59, and 11 other stars battled the elements in the Costa Rican jungle in Bear Grylls’ show, which the interior designer begrudgingly admitted has boosted his popularity.

After being a divisive figure in television for years thanks to his blunt one-liners, Llewelyn-Bowen said he wasn’t “happy about being accepted and popular”.

Recalling a recent experience with fans, he told Closer: “I was in Tesco the other night at exactly the moment where all the builders stop in to buy their tea.

“They kept coming up to me and saying things like, ‘Oh my God, I’ve been watching you on Bear Hunt, I always thought you were a total prat, but I really like you now.’”

Llewelyn-Bowen joked that he was “slightly concerned” about losing his “king prat status”.

He added: “I’m not happy about being accepted and popular, I always liked being the one that people didn’t really know how to react to.”

In Celebrity Bear Hunt, a group of famous faces are dropped into the jungle to become “prey” for TV survivalist Grylls, whose job it is to hunt them down.

Llewelyn-Bowen recently opened up about how Grylls saved him from almost drowning while filming.

“It turns out, I’m actually not built to be an Avenger. I really thought I could take this on. I was full of adrenaline and confidence, but sadly, my abilities were not quite up to the task,” he told MailOnline.

He explained how he got stuck under a raft but, instead of stopping, he pressed on, eventually losing consciousness and experiencing chest pains.

“The next thing I know, I get Bear on top of me – which I know millions of people would give their arm for. But he felt like a damp bag of spanners!”

Llewelyn-Bowen also revealed he accidentally smuggled contraband into the jungle in the form of his own clothing.

“I realised I was the only one there with my own stuff!” he said on This Morning earlier this month.

Host Ben Shephard asked: “So you smuggled in contraband?”

“Well, I wore in contraband and no one said no,” he quipped. “Eventually they did, they did twig and I found myself having to wear high street.

“That was the most traumatic thing. Oh my God. Wearing chain store clothes… it was really itchy!”
