A northeastern company is following New Yorkers and New Jerseyans to the south.
BJ’s Wholesale is opening up their first Myrtle Beach location.
BJ’s headquarters is located just outside of Boston. According to company spokesperson Kirk Saville, the majority of their stores are centered around the company’s northeast home base in New England, New York and New Jersey.
As more folks more to the Grand Strand from New York and New Jersey, Saville said BJ’s noticed, and thought Myrtle Beach would have a great customer base.

“Sometimes we go to a new area, but I’m always amazed in the number of people who know us from New Jersey,” he said.
The store’s first official day open will be on Friday, Feb. 28. Their hours are Monday through Saturday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Saville said this will be the retail giant’s second South Carolina location, and 252nd store. Their first S.C. location is in Summerville, outside of Charleston.
Tall fluorescent-lit shelves line the 100,000 square foot space. They’re stocked with household items, groceries, clothing, appliances and drinks.
What separates BJ’s from its competitors is their large fresh produce section, Saville explained. He added that they also have a full-service deli, and unlike other wholesale-style stores, at BJ’s, it’s possible to get smaller packages of fresh products.

“We have more fresh items than those guys and great quality,” Saville said. “So we really do get people doing their weekly grocery shops.”
More in U.S.
Saville said he’s seen some local chatter on Facebook asking when the new store will finally open.
“It’s just a lot of excitement, so we know it’s a great fit,” he said. “We look for areas where value is important.”
A big part of BJ’s mission as a company is to give back, he said. In South Carolina, they’ve partnered with the Low Country Food Bank. So far, they’ve donated $45,000. Once the store is open, Saville said they’ll donate food on a weekly basis.
Right now, the Myrtle Beach store is employing approximately 100 full and part-time staff, he said.

The entry-level membership in Myrtle Beach will cost $35.
Over the past five years, BJ’s expanded by 100 stores and now operates in 21 states.
Last week, Saville said they opened their 250th store in Louisville, KY. It’s their first store in Kentucky.
