Bergerac has been given the reboot treatment, with Damien Molony playing the titular detective Jim Bergerac for a new generation.
The series finds the detective looking for solace at the bottom of a bottle after his wife’s murder, and he is struggling to keep his life together as a result. His job and his relationship with his daughter are in jeopardy, so when a young woman is murdered he decides to take the lead on the case in order to prove himself which brings him into the path of Jersey business mogul Arthur Wakefield (Philip Glenister).
U’s TV series is a reboot of the BBC show of the same name that starred John Nettles, which aired from 1981 to 1991. Viewers who were familiar with the original gave their verdict on the reboot after its first episode, sharing their thoughts with others on social media.
Reaction to the episode appeared split amongst viewers, with some loving the modern take on the classic story and others feeling like the original was better.
One viewer said on X: “papa more bergerac please [U&Drama] i demand a season 2 !! damien was absolutely incredible!!”

While another person said: “Well, the new #Bergerac was rather good”, and similarly there was a viewer who wrote: “After years of speculation about a reboot, I thought #Bergerac 2.0 really stuck the landing. Fantastic cast and beautiful portrayal of Jersey (& Devon). We do need to remember itās a bit of fun and a work of fiction.”
I really enjoyed the 1st New episode of #Bergerac I usually donāt like reboots, but loving this. Loved the original Bergerac & I think I could get ālostā in this one too.

Another person shared that they were surprised by how much they enjoyed the new series when they usually aren’t enthused by reboots. They said: “I really enjoyed the 1st New episode of #Bergerac I usually donāt like reboots, but loving this. Loved the original Bergerac & I think I could get ālostā in this one too. Canāt wait for the next episode.”
Another viewer delivered a fair assessment of the series as they said: “#Bergerac reboot on [U&Drama] ..It went alright. Very good cast led by Damien Moloney as the titular character, and a script by Being Human’s Toby Whitehouse this modernised version is decent .I wasn’t a huge fan of the original but this has done enough to get me [back next week]”
But not everyone was as enthused by the remake, with one viewer lamenting: So, #Bergerac is backā¦ only itās not. Just another generic, cliche ridden copper with a problem masquerading under the name. Will be surprised if it runs to a second series.”
While another unenthused viewer simply said: “At least we still have the original.” In a similar vein, one viewer wrote: “Iāll stick with the classics thanks! #Bergerac As Charlie would sayā¦.’Bloomin Ada'”

There was another who wrote: “Trying hard to enjoy the new Bergerac, but compared to the original, it’s dull and slow. What’s the point of using the original names when it’s been changed so much, and do we need the F word, does it improve the programme?”
Bergerac will continue to air every Thursday on U&Drama, and is available on U’s streaming platform.
