A 33-year-old steakhouse in downtown Cincinnati has permanently closed

The name “Morton’s” was unceremoniously cut out of the awning of the Downtown steakhouse this week. Decorations inside have been taken off the walls and the Morton’s website has removed any mention of its Cincinnati location. When I tried to reach the restaurant, the phone wasn’t working and their Facebook page listed the steakhouse as “permanently closed.”

And so it appears Cincinnati has lost another restaurant. Morton’s The Steakhouse, which opened in 1991 inside the Carew Tower, was part of a chain of nearly 100 steakhouses founded in Chicago in 1978. When it opened, Cincinnati Post reporter Dale Stevens thought it was a gutsy move in a city where “the flamboyant and shrewd” Jeff Ruby was the proverbial steakhouse king of Cincinnati. “Seldom in Cincinnati has one restaurant dominated a category as completely as has the Precinct, the city’s best steakhouse,” Stevens wrote. “At least up until now.”

The chain was purchased by Landry’s Inc., a Houston-based restaurant and hospitality group, in 2011. Landry’s also owns McCormick & Schmick’s, the steak and seafood restaurant chain that has a location directly across the street from Morton’s, which remains open.

The Enquirer reached out to representatives from Landry’s Inc. on Thursday morning but has yet to receive a response.

This story has been updated to correct how long the restaurant has been open.
