Abilene police officers recognized by FBI for infant rescue and suspect apprehension

Six Abilene undercover police officers were recognized Friday by the FBI for their part in the rescue of a kidnapped infant and arrest of a man accused of a double homicide, according to a police media release.

The recognition took place in a private ceremony at Abilene Police Department headquarters Friday.

FBI Dallas Acting Special Agent in Charge P. J. O’Brien and Assistant Special Agent in Charge Geoffrey M. McGuire awarded the officers FBI director’s certificates — signed by FBI Director Christopher A. Wray — for their exceptional service.

On May 5, police were contacted by the FBI’s Abilene Resident Agency and were requested to assist agents with a suspect, Alek Isaiah Collins of Manvel, who was believed to be hiding at an Abilene residence, the press release stated.

Officers responded and assisted FBI special agents with overnight surveillance on the residence.

As additional law enforcement was being obtained for a hostage rescue, Collins emerged from the residence with the infant and attempted to flee, according to allegations.

At that point, officers converged on the suspect and placed him under arrest, and the infant was rescued and reunited with family, the release stated.

After his arrest, Collins was extradited from the Taylor County Jail to the Cibola County Correctional Center in New Mexico.

He was being held there Tuesday, according to online New Mexico court records.

Collins is facing felony charges in the U.S. District Court of New Mexico for allegations of kidnapping a minor and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a violent crime, according to online court records.

He is also charged in Taylor County with two first-degree felony counts of aggravated robbery and aggravated assault against a public servant, according to Taylor County court records.

“Congratulations to each officer for their tremendous accomplishments during this difficult and dangerous investigation and the work you do each day to uphold your oaths of office,” McGuire said.
