AfD leaders travel to Washington, watch Trump inauguration on video

Leaders of Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) travelled to Washington for US President Donald Trump’s inauguration on Monday, but were left to watch the event from a distance via video.

AfD co-chairman Tino Chrupalla and Beatrix von Storch, the deputy leader of the AfD parliamentary group, were among thousands confined to a viewing area about two kilometres from the US Capitol.

“Unfortunately, the exceptionally cold weather didn’t allow me to watch the inauguration from my seat in the stands,” Chrupalla told dpa.

Due to harsh weather, organizers had moved the swearing-in ceremony from outside the US Capitol into the building, limiting the number of attendees.

During their visit, Chrupalla said he had met with business representatives, members of Congress, and diplomats.

Meanwhile, von Storch said she had met with key figures from Trump’s inner circle, including Donald Trump Jr and Steve Bannon, the former campaign strategist known for his far-right views.

Von Storch called the trip to Washington “100%” worthwhile, adding that the Republicans know that the AfD is their partner in Germany.

She acknowledged that not all interests were aligned but emphasized that it was about the bigger picture: “ending the left-wing woke movement,” a goal she believes unites the AfD and Republicans.
