Who will be the first recipient in the new Government of the Nicholas Ridley Memorial Prize for Nimbyism? Listening to Rachel Reeves, the Chancellor, declaring war on Middle England on Monday, I was reminded of the late Tory politician who was environment secretary in the 1980s. Ridley wanted to see new towns built in the South of England to tackle housing shortages and stimulate growth, so there is nothing new in Labour’s approach nearly 40 years later.
