Aldi customer says she found ‘bumhole in stewed steak tin’

Aldi customer says she found ‘bumhole in stewed steak tin’

A ‘sickened’ Aldi customer claims to have found what ‘looked like a bumhole’ in her tin of stewed steak – as people quipped it was like a ‘bushtucker trial’.

Maggie Duncan said she spotted the inch-long tube with a puckered end as she tipped the £2.09 tinned meal into a plastic container before heating it up on January 8. But as the 62-year-old emptied the Aldi own-brand Bramwells meal and forked through the meat she was ‘sickened’ by the object that her equally horrified husband said looked like a chicken’s anus.

Aldi apologised but explained that in ‘very rare’ occasions, ‘gristle-like material can occasionally occur with meat products’. The customer acknowledged that some ‘gristle or fat’ is to be expected in a meat product but claims this went ‘above and beyond’ what she believes was acceptable.

Stunned social media users exclaimed it looked like a ‘bumhole’ or ‘heart valve’ and quipped it would take ‘some chewing’. One asked ‘what in the bushtucker trial are you playing at Aldi?’ – a nod to when celebs are forced to chow down on stomach-churning delicacies including anus on the hit ITV show.

Maggie, from Carluke, South Lanarkshire, said: “I’ve never seen anything like this in my food before. I just couldn’t believe it, I was actually feeling sick even just looking at it. The fact that someone could have made, say, a pie with that and ended up with that in their mouth… for me it just doesn’t look fit for human consumption.

“It’s a meat product, you expect meat in there and maybe the wee odd bit of gristle or fat, but that’s above and beyond what you’d expect. I took the photos and shared them online because I was shocked and to warn other people that were buying it to check it before they eat it.

“There were some interesting comments online [saying it looked like a ‘bumhole’] and to be honest that’s exactly what it looks like. My husband said it looked like a chicken’s anus.”

The horrified mum-of-two said she bought the stewed steak, with a best-before-end date of 2026, from the Carluke branch of Aldi at the end of November. She said it was not ‘fit for human consumption’ and refused to even serve it to her two dogs, one-year-old cockapoos Shadow and Barney.

Maggie said: “Previously my husband has eaten it and the dogs have had the leftovers and they loved it. I opened it, transferred it into a plastic dish, I forked through it and this disgusting piece of offal was there.

“It was mid-way down the tin and was an inch long and wide. I didn’t feed [the dogs] the rest of the tinned stew steak, even they didn’t get it, it’s still in the tub in the fridge.

“I’m going to take it into the shop when I go home and see what they’ve got to say. The dogs had Aldi dog meat, it looked more appetising than the stewed steak. I wouldn’t buy it again.

“I would like to know what it is, how it got in there and how that can be passed for human consumption. I never liked it and my husband won’t be eating it again.”

Maggie shared a Facebook post, which read: “Folks beware!! How can this be fit for human consumption? Absolutely disgusting.”

A spokesperson for Aldi said: “Although very rare, this gristle-like material can occasionally occur with meat products. We apologise to Ms Duncan and would ask her to return the product to her local store so we can investigate fully.”
