Animal Care Services holds ‘Wag & Wash’ event to help pet adoptions

The sound of yips and the smell of puppy breath filled the air at Corpus Christi’s Animal Care Services Saturday.

The site held its Wag & Wash event for volunteers to give puppies baths to help the four-legged critters hopefully get adopted.

Matilda Perez, the services’ community relations specialist, said all of the department’s kennels are full. Some even have more than one dog or a litter of puppies.

“Today’s event is to help get some of these dogs get adoption ready,” Perez said as volunteers gave puppies baths outside. “We will be taking five puppies that get a bath today to an event later this afternoon in hopes to get adopted. The rest will be taken to other events later in hopes to find a new home as well.”

Animal Care Services helps promote and protect the health, safety and welfare of residents and pets of Corpus Christi. The department helps pick up stray animals, helps with public safety animals, gives out free microchips for pet owners and has a spay and neuter program, Perez said.

Any animal that comes through the shelter will be spayed or neutered to help with the pet population. To help prevent lost dogs, people can come get free microchips from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

As for adopting, Perez said each animal — dog or cat, and sometimes guinea pigs — is only $25. Residents just need to bring an ID and they will receive their new friend, including a leash, collar, toy and coupons for the new pet.

Card, money order or check is the only approved form of payment. Adoptions are open to the public from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

“We don’t have space at the moment to bring in any more strays,” Perez said. “We hope people will come out and adopt a pet soon. We’re really trying to help the community and help people find their furry loved ones.”
