An appeal has been lodged against the seizure and confiscation of the Eventin oil tanker, which was wrecked in the Baltic Sea off the German island of Rügen in January.
A spokesman for the Finance Ministry in Berlin said on Monday that “further enforcement measures” would not be taken until the competent court has made a decision.
The Panama-flagged tanker is one of more than 150 ships in the so-called Russian shadow fleet that are subject to sanctions over the war in Ukraine.
The Eventin drifted in the Baltic Sea for hours in January, unable to manoeuvre after all of its systems failed.
According to earlier reports, the tanker had been on its way from Ust-Luga in Russia to Port Said in Egypt with around 100,000 tonnes of oil on board.
Authorities have since confirmed that the ship and its cargo were seized by customs and subsequently confiscated.
“The confiscation will also create the legal conditions for the realisation of the ship and the cargo,” the spokesman said.
