Apple Teases $650 iPhone 16 Trade-In Deal, But Do You Need to Upgrade?

Apple’s flagship smartphones are a big investment, especially if you buy the high-end Pro Max. So, the company is offering a few trade-in deals for those who are upgrading their old iPhones.

Apple is teasing trade-in offers between $180 and $650 if you swap an iPhone 12 or higher for a new iPhone 16. You can also get up to $1,000 in credits with a carrier offer.

On its website, Apple says an iPhone 12 can get you $180, an iPhone 13 is going for $250, and an iPhone 14 trade-in is at $400.

You’d need to trade in an iPhone 15 Pro Max to get the $650. But it’s debatable whether you should upgrade to an iPhone 16 if you have an iPhone 15 Pro Max (or 15 Pro at $520) since the high-end iPhone 15 Pro models will be compatible with Apple Intelligence when it launches in October. The main benefit of the iPhone 16 at this point seems to be the more powerful A18 chip and the new Camera Control button to go along with the usual camera upgrades.

If your aging phone is ready for an upgrade, however, AT&T is offering iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models at no extra cost to new and existing customers with a trade-in. For iPhone 16 Plus and iPhone 16 Pro Max, the carrier is offering up to $830 and $1,000 off, respectively. Trade-in deals from T-Mobile and Verizon are quite similar.

The iPhone 16 lineup was announced at Apple’s “Glowtime” event yesterday, and the base variant of the iPhone 16 starts at $799. Preorders begin on Sept. 13 ahead of a Sept. 20 launch.
