The Apple Valley Unified School District was honored by the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools for the work done in “District Wide Peer Tutoring.”
The district was honored during the RIMS AVID Impact Awards Reception and Ceremony on Oct. 29, at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario.
Apple Valley Unified School District students are recruited and trained as AVID tutors.
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an academic support program for middle and high school students, according to the California Department of Education. The program places academically average students in advanced classes.

High school juniors and seniors interested in becoming AVID tutors for high school freshmen and sophomores, as well as seventh and eighth graders, attend training sessions and are taught skills in peer tutoring, the district stated.
“Students who are part of the peer tutoring training program have expressed their enthusiasm for this initiative, not only for the training itself, but also for the sense of belonging to a larger AVID family,” said Mariana Torres, Apple Valley Unified School District director of equity and access.
Once trained, the students have the opportunity to apply to be AVID tutors at various schools within the district.
Students who work outside of their school day are paid using categorical funds or are given community service credit. This program helps the district to fill the need for qualified tutors, despite the district’s distance from a university.

“This effort of peer tutoring has created a system of support for our AVID programs across the district and given valuable skills and experience to our AVID juniors and seniors, useful in college and beyond,” said Patrick Schlosser, assistant superintendent of educational services.
