As 2025 begins, a look at what’s ahead for New Jersey

We’ve got a lot on our minds in North Jersey.

We get up each morning and think about our commute, the developments we’ll see popping up in our neighborhoods, the money we’re going to spend that day, the meals we’ll eat and how our favorite team will do that night.

But that’s not all. We get it.

2025 is shaping up to be newsy, not only with a new Trump administration taking over the White House, but with a packed field of candidates looking to succeed Phil Murphy as New Jersey’s next governor. From politics to health care to high school sports to the housing crisis and much more, 2025 is likely to bring its share of surprises.

We asked our reporters to look into their figurative crystal balls to note some of the key events and trends readers should watch out for this year, from toll hikes, rising retail prices and Medicaid cuts to the search for a new Rutgers president, required action by towns on affordable housing and a new police use-of-force policy.
