Ashtabula County Safety Council presents awards

Jul. 12—ASHTABULA — The Ashtabula County Safety Council presented their 2024 ACSC scholarship, Dixon Greenwood Safety Award and Safety Grant at the Andrus Banquet Center Thursday afternoon.

ACSC President Ryan Cochran said that Ashtabula used to have the biggest safety council in the state of Ohio.

Dixon Greenwood, who worked at Union Carbide after World War II, was an advocate on worker safety and establishing committees to help improve safety for employees.

Union Industrial Contractors, owned by Cochran, won the Dixon Greenwood Award.

The award was established in 1989 and is presented each year to an individual or company that best contributes to the mission of health and safety for their company and the community, according to the ACSD website.

“We’re really happy to get that award,” Cochran said. “Something that we’ve always said at our company … I want to make sure everyday that somebody goes home with all of the fingers and toes they brought with them. I never wanted to be the person to ever knock on someone’s door and try and tell them why their spouse isn’t coming home. Over the years, we’ve been getting a lot more people that are safety conscious. You can see it in the community.”

University of Akron student Alex Kennedy received the $1,000 2024 ACSC scholarship.

“It feels great to receive this scholarship,” he said. “I think the Ashtabula County Safety Council does a great job of recognizing the students. Being able to attend the luncheon … meet some of the people around the community and receive the scholarship during the luncheon allows me to feel welcome. I’m very greatly, because this supports my academic career.”

Safety Council Manager Jennifer Swickard said that he turned in a wonderful letter for his application.

“He’s a talented young man,” she said. “We are very excited for him.”

Edgewood High School Athletic Director Steve Kray received the Safety Grant.

“We applied for the Safety Grant to buy some safety kits for our teachers,” he said. “We’re going to present those to them in August. There will be a small kit that has some first aid equipment. It feels great to get the grant, because this will cover the majority of the cost for those kits.”
