Nov. 2—JEFFERSON — The Ashtabula County Board of Elections is seeing high amounts of early in-person voting before Tuesday’s general election, Ashtabula County Board of Elections Director Charlie Frye said.
According to the county board of election’s website, 8,343 people have voted early in-person, as of Friday afternoon.
The 2020 general election’s total early in-person voting count was 8,593.
Frye said he expects 2024 early in-person voting in the county to beat 2020.
Frye said the Ohio Secretary of State’s office told him the county has done a great job avoiding long lines seen at other counties’ in-office voting centers.
The board of election office has been using an expanded voting area, which Frye said is working well.
At an Oct. 15 board meeting, Frye predicted early in-person voting would start high, drop off in mid-October, then pick up again as election day approaches.
Frye said his predictions did not completely pan out. There was no drop off in early voting in the middle of the month, but officials have seen a rise in voting close to election day, he said.
Frye said, while absentee voting is high, it will not beat 2020.
According to the board’s website, 6,925 people requested absentee ballots by mail in 2024, compared to 15,309 in 2020. The deadline to request an absentee ballot has already passed.
Early voting will continue today from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m at the Board of Election’s office at 8 West Walnut St. in Jefferson.
Polls will be open Tuesday, from 6:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m.
