Police have arrested two juveniles and charged them with murder in connection with the shooting of a 13-year-old in East Austin, the Austin Police Department said in a press release Monday.
Officers arrived at the 6300 block of Thurgood Avenue after 8:30 p.m. Thursday and found Jeremiah Cavazos with one gunshot wound, the release said. Officer Jeremy Fisher, a spokesperson for the Austin Police Department, previously said the victim had been shot in the chest. Cavazos died at the scene at 8:55 p.m., the release said.
Homicide detectives discovered that Cavazos and “Juvenile #2” had driven a stolen vehicle to the 6300 block of Thurgood Avenue to meet with “Juvenile #1,” according to the release, which did not name the juveniles.
Cavazos and “Juvenile #2” “appeared to rob” “Juvenile #1,” which prompted a shooting between the three individuals, wherein Cavazos suffered the gunshot wound, the release said.
Cavazos got back into the backseat of the suspect vehicle and “Juvenile #2” began to drive the vehicle, which threw Cavazos from the vehicle onto the pavement. Investigators determined “Juvenile #1” fled from the scene on foot, the release said.
“Juvenile #2” was arrested and charged with capital murder and could face life in prison without parole or the death penalty. “Juvenile #1” was charged with first-degree murder and could spend up to 99 years in prison.
