An Autauga County student has been arrested in connection with an altercation that happened on a school bus.
The 18-year-old male was charged with misdemeanor assault, said Autauga County Sheriff Mark Harrell.
On Friday, the sheriff’s office was informed by the Autauga County Board of Education and the Prattville Baptist Hospital emergency room about an altercation on a school bus, the sheriff said.
“Upon further investigation it was determined that there were two aggressors in the altercation, an 18-year-old male and a 14-year-old female that caused injury to another 14-year-old (student),” Harrell said. “On (Wednesday) the 18-year-old male … was arrested for assault third degree for the incident that took place. This is an ongoing investigation and may include more charges on other individuals.
“The incident was videoed by individuals on the bus along with the bus surveillance system. The video showed the victim did not provoke this brutal incident. The board of education and the Autauga County Sheriffâs Office will not tolerate any incident causing disruption in Autauga County Schools nor on a school bus.”
The school district reported the incident “immediately,” to law enforcement and have “…worked with our law enforcement partners throughout the process, said Superintendent Lyman Woodfin.
“While school officials cannot comment on active investigations, student safety has always been, and continue to be, our first priority,” Woodfin said.
Harrell said the Autauga County Sheriffâs Office appreciates the assistance of Autauga County Board of Education in the investigation. Harrell noted that it’s an ongoing investigation involving juveniles, and no other information was immediately released.
