Jan. 3—Though many area schools closed two hours early Friday in anticipation of an onslaught of wintry weather, by the time the skies cleared after sunset, only the barest dusting of snow had fallen on the Baltimore area.
The National Weather Service allowed its winter weather advisory to expire at 7 p.m. Friday — but warned travelers that steadily falling temperatures could turn the wet slick on the ground into ice overnight.

“Please be careful driving tonight,” the weather service posted on its website. “Any roads that appear wet may be icy, especially across bridges and overpasses.”
Skies are expected to clear up Saturday for a chilly Ravens game.
But Baltimoreans will only have a short time to breathe a sigh of relief. Another storm that could dump between four and eight inches of snow is expected to blow into the city Sunday night into Monday, according to accuweather.com. Meteorologists noted that the total is subject to change.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott and other local officials urged city residents to take the proper precautions at a Friday afternoon news conference, where the mayor noted that the city is taking an “all hands on deck” effort to prepare for the first major snowfall of the season.

“I know we have not had a lot of snow in the past few years, so we’re just asking all of our residents: Please take this storm seriously,” said Joey Henderson, director of the city’s Office of Emergency Management.
Anticipating the one to two inches of snow that had been forecast, public schools in Baltimore County, Frederick County and Carroll County closed two hours early Friday, the school districts said on social media, while Howard County Public Schools closed 90 minutes early. After-school activities were canceled in Baltimore City, Harford County and Montgomery County.
Temperatures are expected to drop to a low of 24 on Friday night near BWI, though winds gusting as high as 30 mph were expected to make it feel even colder.
Saturday will bring a high of 31 and gusts of western wind as high as 34 mph before temperatures dip below freezing as the Ravens host the Cleveland Browns starting at 4:30 p.m. Saturday’s low will be around 20, and Sunday is expected to be sunny with a high near 33.

Gerard Jebaily, chief meteorologist for FOX45 News, said the current forecast is for 4 to 8 inches in the Baltimore area, with most of the snowfall wrapping up by sunset on Monday. He noted, though, that a heavy storm band could bring more than 8 inches — possibly up to a foot of snow — somewhere in the state. It’s just unknown where it will land.
Though the outlook for Monday is still hazy, the models consistently show Maryland in the system’s path and at the temperatures to cause snow, Jebaily said. But warm air from the south could be pulled into the system, reducing possible snow totals.
“This storm could change,” Henderson, Baltimore’s OEM director, said. “We are hoping that it does, but if not, the city is prepared.”
The chance of snow is 80% Sunday night, according to the Weather Service, and 100% by Monday.

The city’s winter shelters are active through Tuesday. The city began treating its roadways with brine late Thursday night, and will be doing so again in advance of Sunday’s expected snowstorm, said Veobia Akilo, interim director of Baltimore’s Department of Transportation. Motorists should take it slow this weekend and avoid the roads during snowfall when possible.
Temperatures Monday are expected to hover just below 30, with winds from the northeast at 5 to 10 mph. Night will mean low temperatures of around 19 degrees, with a 40% chance of snow.
Tuesday is expected to be mostly sunny with a high near 30 degrees.
