Baltimore weather: Skies to turn blustery and chilly as cold front brings chance of rain, snow

Baltimoreans wishing for a glimpse of snow may be in luck as the middle of the week brings a chance of snow showers and blustery winds overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

“The exact temperature will be critical for any potential impacts from any light accumulating snowfall Thursday morning,” the weather service said in its forecast discussion issued Tuesday.

While Wednesday is forecast to have increasing clouds with a high of 43, temperatures are expected drop as a strong cold front approaches the area. Late into the night, the forecast calls for a 40% chance of rain and snow showers at BWI Marshall Airport with winds gusting as high as 31 mph. The overnight low will be around 35.

Winter shelters have been activated in Baltimore City and Baltimore County. Five shelters are operated by the Mayor’s Office of Homeless Services during daytime hours. Those seeking overnight shelter must call the emergency hotline at 443-984-9540 to get connected. In the county, those seeking refuge should contact the Department of Social Services hotline at 410-887-TIME (8463).

In the mountains of Maryland, the combination of powdery snow and high winds overnight from Wednesday to Thursday make blizzard conditions more likely, according to the weather service, which warned of travel difficulty into Thursday evening.

On Thursday, mostly sunny skies are forecast with a high near 39 during the day along with breezy conditions. Winds will be out of the west at 17 to 22 mph. The weather service said winds, forecast to gust as high as 39 mph, may be gusty enough to require a high wind warning.

By Friday, skies will be sunny but the cold will settle in with a daytime high near 38. Friday night is expected to be mostly clear as the low drops to near 23.

The weekend brings a slight warming trend as Saturday’s high is forecast to break into the 40s as nighttime temps dip below freezing again. Sunday will be sunny with a high of 51 before turning mostly cloudy in the evening with a low around 36.

By early next week, according to the weather service, rain and showers are set to return.
