BBC Breakfast stirred a wave of reaction from their audience on Tuesday when Ben Thompson and Sally Nugent interrupted regular programming with an exciting announcement about Oasis. Sally opened the segment, saying: “Good morning it is Tuesday 27th of August, and our main story in the last few moments, the band Oasis has announced a UK and Ireland tour next year with gigs in Cardiff, Manchester, London, Edinburgh, and Dublin.”
As they unveiled a ‘Breaking News’ graphic, Ben excitedly shared: “Hot off the press, this is it, this is the confirmation so many people have been waiting for. That long-awaited reunion.”
The presenters highlighted that the famous group, known for smash hits such as ‘Wonderwall’ and ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’, split in 2009. They then turned to culture correspondent Charlotte Gallagher for more information.
Addressing Charlotte, Ben said: “A lot of speculation, a lot of rumour, this is it.”
To which Charlotte responded: “I am so glad they’ve announced it when we’ve not all just been saying it was going to happen and then they said, ‘We’re going to re-issue an old album, guys’,” reports the Express.
Charlotte elaborated on the Oasis’ 14-date tour, telling the hosts: “Let’s be honest if they sell out Wembley four dates, they’re going to add more, aren’t they? They may well break Taylor Swift’s record.”
Sally wrapped up the discussion by adding: “In the statement we have had in the last few moments, they are only fanning the flames basically, aren’t they? The anticipation..”
The recent Oasis announcement sparked mixed reactions, with some BBC Breakfast viewers expressing excitement, while others criticised the show for allocating too much time to the band’s news. Viewers took to social media to voice their opinions: “Another no news day #BBCBreakfast,” one fan remarked, suggesting a slow news day, while another implored, “Please stop talking about Oasis, you said it all yesterday.”
One wittily added, “Surely the BBC should also add that ‘Other bands are available’.#Oasis #BBCBreakfast,” hinting at the need for musical diversity.
Another viewer went on: “Oasis must be down to their last £10 million. Personally, I can’t understand the hype. #bbcbreakfast.”
A fifth viewer stated: “Is it just me that doesn’t give a stuff about an #oasis reunion #BBCBreakfast,” and another jaded comment read: “#Oasis the Beatles tribute band gonna announce some gigs. Zzzzzzzzzzz #BBCBreakfast.”
The use of TV licence funds also raised concerns with one viewer stating, “How much time and my TV licence money does the BBC intend to spend on this totally unimportant piece of ‘news’? ” Yet, there were those who shared positive sentiments – one enthusiastic viewer replied: “Superb…I’ll be there,” whilst another mirrored the excitement: ” Unreal news, get in! “.
