BBC Strictly Come Dancing’s Gorka Marquez addresses tearful photo as he makes candid admission

Strictly Come Dancing star Gorka Marquez has admitted he has days where he ‘doesn’t want to dance’ as he opened up about a social media post that went viral.

In September, the professional dancer was praised for posting a photo of himself sat in the car with tears running down his face. In the post, he explained that he felt ‘guilty’ for leaving his fiancee Gemma Atkinson and their kids to go to work.

Gorka admitted he felt as though he was “letting them down by not being” with Gemma and their kids Mia, who is five, and one-year-old Thiago. Fans flooded Gorka’s post with messages of support and praised the star for being open and vulnerable about his feelings.

In a new interview with Metro.co.uk, Gorka revealed why he shared the post. “People always show us with a smile, entertaining, with glitter, getting hair and make up done, doing a theatre tour or doing an arena tour and believe everything is just ‘Wow’. But there is a lot of sacrifice,” the dancer said.

He continued: “I left home when I was 16 to become a dancer. Sometimes I don’t feel like I want to dance, like how people don’t want to go into the office. Sometimes, your body is broke from nine hours a day rehearsing and it’s cold and your joints are aching but you have to do it.”

Addressing the viral post, Gorka said he wanted “to help people going through the same thing, to make them feel less alone”.

“I just did it to show that we’re still like humans,” Gorka explained. “I don’t consider myself famous. I just consider myself as dancer who is lucky enough to perform on television.”

In his original post, shared in September as he was preparing to take part in this year’s series of Strictly Come Dancing with his celebrity partner Dr Punam Krishan, Gorka said he wanted to share a moment “that sometimes we hide or keep for ourselves, especially being a man”.

He wrote: “I feel like today should be one of those days where everyone might think all is happiness, joy, excitement, for all what is about to start with Strictly… And YES It is. But at the same time I get a feeling of sadness, guilt, for going away for what ever long it is. A feeling of letting them down for not being there, a sense of failure to them….”

Gorka’s co-stars were quick to offer their support. Oti Mabuse wrote: “Oh Gorka. it’s so hard buddy but you are a great dad they have a super system with mum.” Dianne Buswell commented: “Gorks sending you love and I can’t imagine how hard leaving your babies must be! But they love their daddy so much and you’re doing them proud every day.”

Partner Gemma also responded to Gorka’s post, with a sweet message saying her and the kids would be ‘right there’ with him. The Hits Radio host commented: “I’m just gutted you’ve packed all your decent hoodies! wtf am I supposed to wear? [crying laughing emoji]. We Love you and cannot wait to see you do your thing! Mia’s already given me Saturday nights instructions. You keep that record of the most 10s going with Dr Punam! We’ll be right here at the finish line!”
