Secure your doors and roll up your windows, there’s a black bear bandit and a rare litter of five cubs breaking into cars in the Great Smoky Mountains.

A momma bear was caught breaking into a white SUV not once, but twice, as five small cub accomplices roamed around the outside of the vehicle waiting for her on Sunday, June 23. The black bear was caught on a Ring camera crawling into the vehicle through an open back window and absconding with a paper bag off-camera as the cubs scampered after.

The second theft happened just a few minutes later.

The black bear emerged from off-screen, before climbing in through the same window and could be seen in the front of the car with another paper bag. The cubs gathered around the vehicle waiting for her to reemerge with the other bag.

The Ring camera shows the four-legged thieves leaving the scene with bag in mouth and the five small accomplices following in a line behind toward a wooded area.

Here’s a photo of the black bear bandits leaving the scene:

People are cautioned not to approach the bandits, and to take care to make sure that vehicle windows are closed and that food is not left out to attract them.

How many cubs can a black bear have?

The black bear bandits might be a rarity. According to bear.org, most litters are two or three cubs. The record is six, found in Pennsylvania.

Three cubs is more common in Minnesota and eastward in the U.S where food is more abundant, bear.org says.

With a litter of five, it’s no wonder the mama bear went back for seconds.
