Beverly man with stockpile of guns arrested for inciting shootings at synagogues, police say

A Beverly man was arrested on January 2 for allegedly threatening violence against the Jewish community online while owning several guns.

34-year-old Matthew Scouras is charged with twelve counts of possession of a firearm without a license, threatening to destroy a place of worship, illegal possession of ammunition, possession of a large capacity feeding device, improper storage of a firearm, willful communication of a threat with a dangerous item (gun), and making a firearm without a serial number.

According to Beverly Police, they received a tip from the FBI National Threat Operations Center that an individual at 527 Essex Street, later identified as Scouras, was posting threats against Jewish people on an internet image board.

Investigators say Scouras posted threats to rape Jewish women and encouraged other users of the site to carry out shootings at synagogues.

Police made an initial visit to the residence, and then obtained a search warrant from Salem District Court. Scouras was taken into custody and held for a mental health evaluation.

According to authorities, officers found a Nazi flag, a 9mm Glock “ghost gun” with no serial number, six boxes of ammunition, three large-capacity rifle magazines, 11 lower receivers for various rifles, other firearm parts, scopes, pistol frames, a jig used for drilling holes into polymer pistol handles, rifle stocks, and more than $70,000 in cash in Scouras’s bedroom. Investigators also found a cell phone and two desktop computers.

Following the search of his home, a warrant was issued for Scouras’s arrest. He was taken into custody without incident on Saturday.
