Binghamton’s Main Street Dollar General shuttered: Why it was closed down

Dollar General on Binghamton’s West Side has been closed by the City of Binghamton Code Enforcement Office.

The 68 Main St. building previously housed a CVS Pharmacy, which closed in January 2019. After remaining empty for over five years, Dollar General opened there in April.

According to notices posted on the doors of the store, a hearing regarding the property took place on July 22, and the property was condemned on July 25.

Assistant Supervisor of Building Construction & Code Enforcement Dave Watson first visited the location with Assistant Fire Marshall Captain Arthur Griswold on July 5, 2023, according to the notice, following complaints of leaks entering through the roof.

A Notice of Violation was issued, outlining seven violations which include water leaking from the roof onto open electrical junction boxes, an inactive electrical panel, water pouring through a rear entrance, faulty hardware and a hole in a basement fire exit. The issues had not been corrected by the time of a second inspection on July 11.

On Tuesday, a notice dated July 25 remained posted on the door, marking the building as unfit to occupy and barring anyone from occupying the building without consent from the Director of Code Enforcement.

Dollar General has not yet replied to a request for comment.
