‘Blood on his hands’: Stoughton man accused of stabbing mother, stepfather at apartment complex

A Stoughton man is facing multiple charges after police said he stabbed his mother and her husband at their apartment on Page Terrace Sunday night.

Paul O’Brien was held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing during his arraignment on Monday morning. He is charged with two counts each of armed assault to murder on a person 60 or older, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a person 60 or older, assault and battery causing serious bodily injury, and assault and battery.

The stabbing happened on Sunday night at the apartment complex where O’Brien lives, authorities said.

According to the police report, O’Brien called police just after 8 p.m. Sunday and told the dispatcher that his mother was injured and that he had stabbed her.

Police said when asked how many times he stabbed her, he replied “enough” and that they were going to die.

When police arrived, O’Brien was standing outside with what appeared to be “blood on his hands and face,” police wrote in their report.

The report indicates O’Brien surrendered without incident.

Once officers went inside, they located O’Brien’s mother face down outside of the bathroom, lying in what appeared to be a pool of blood.

Her husband was then located in the bedroom with multiple stab wounds throughout his back and torso.

He told police they had been sitting in the bedroom and O’Brien walked in and stabbed them both repeatedly.

However, O’Brien told police over the phone that his mother tried to stab him, so he had to stab her.

Both O’Brien’s mother and her husband, who are over 60, required emergency surgery for their injuries.

One of them had to be flown by medical helicopter to a Boston hospital. Their conditions were not known on Monday.

O’Brien is expected to be back in court on Friday for a dangerousness hearing.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
