As cold as it got after midnight? That’s the high temperature of the day for much of north Florida, according to the National Weather Service.
The latest cold front is passing the state, more cold air is coming in from the north, and a freeze watch is in effect through Saturday morning for most of inland northeast Florida down to Gainesville with temperatures as low as the high 20s possible, according to the National Weather Service.
“Appropriate action should be taken to ensure tender vegetation and outdoor pets have adequate protection from the cold temperatures, the NWS said. “Young children, the elderly and the homeless are especially vulnerable to the cold. Take measures to protect them.”

There’s also a chance of isolated showers across Central Florida from Daytona Beach to Tampa before noon.
The cold front is expected to push south by Friday afternoon or evening. After a chilly weekend, temperatures are expected to steadily increase before the arrival of another cold front Thursday, Dec. 12.

Florida weather: How cold will it get?
For Friday and Saturday, the Florida Division of Emergency Management forecast:
Friday:
-
Northern portions of the Panhandle, north of the I-10 corridor, could see low temperatures reach just below or near freezing and patchy frost develop.
-
Central Florida will see low temperatures in the middle to upper 40s Friday night. South Florida will see low temperatures in the 50s and low 60s.
Saturday:
-
High temperatures will reach the low to middle 60s across North Florida, low to middle 70s across Central Florida and upper 70s across South Florida.
-
South Florida will see low temperatures in the 50s and low 60s. Temperatures will rebound Saturday night reaching the 40s across North Florida, 50s across Central Florida and 60s across South Florida.
Will new cold front bring snow to Florida?
Probably not.
For snow to fall, there has to be moisture in the atmosphere and the temperature has to be right.
“Snow forms when the atmospheric temperature is at or below freezing — 0°C or 32°F,” according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center.
“If the ground temperature is at or below freezing, the snow will reach the ground. However, the snow can still reach the ground when the ground temperature is above freezing if the conditions are just right.

“As a general rule, though, snow will not form if the ground temperature is at least 41” degrees Fahrenheit.

How can there be frost if temps are above 32?
Frost can’t form if temperatures are above 32 degrees but ground-level temperatures, especially on clear, cold nights, can be several degrees colder than just a few feet higher, according to the National Weather Service.
That’s because cold air sinks.
“Since official weather measurements are taken in an instrument shelter four to five feet above the ground, frost can form even when the official temperature is above freezing.”
When temperatures drop below freezing and the temperature reaches the dew or frost point, the ice on the ground is termed frost or frozen dew.
