Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza is a serious candidate for the Mets managerial opening, according to league sources.
Mendoza has been a hot name all month, also interviewing with the San Francisco Giants and Cleveland Guardians. His interview with the Giants was said to have gone well, but when Bob Melvin became available, that process ended. He is still believed to be in the mix in Cleveland.
One source called Mendoza a “finalist” with the Mets, but another source called that word too strong. The Mets themselves have not anointed “finalists.” We are in a semantic season, so here are the facts:
– Mendoza had a first-round interview last week, which was not in person.
– Several other candidates received first-round interviews and did not receive in-person callbacks.
– Mendoza had an in-person callback Wednesday.
– That interview was said to have gone well, and Mendoza remains involved in the process.
The big wild card here, of course, is the Craig Counsell factor. According to two league sources, Counsell has had one long telephone chat with the Mets. Some sources classified that as an interview, others classified it as a conversation. He is receiving his callback Thursday, as the New York Post first reported.
Sources have long told us that Counsell is open to the idea of coming to New York. He and the Brewers have kept their dealings close to their respective vests; other teams hoping to hire Counsell do not know where he stands in talks with his hometown team.
The Mets also do not yet know if they will have a manager by the time president of baseball operations David Stearns arrives at the GM Meetings in Scottsdale, Ariz. on Monday. The key in this process is for Stearns to find a partner with whom he can enjoy a strong working relationship.
There are additional candidates involved in the Mets search. I don’t have their names right now. But there is a decent amount of new information in this little article, okay? Okay? Alright bye.
