Carol Vorderman was turned away from the Wales Office because they didn’t know who she was

Broadcaster Carol Vorderman was briefly refused entry to the Wales Office while en route to a Downing Street event when a security guard didn’t recognise her, according to a former Welsh secretary. Ex-MP Simon Hart has released a book of his memoirs detailing his years at the heart of the UK Government.

Within it he details being at the cabinet table during Covid, his frustrations with the Welsh Government, and some brutal analysis about Mark Drakeford. You can read the full story about the book here and go here to find out about how Boris Johnson discussed the idea of a cable car stretching between north and south Wales while he was Prime Minister.

He also shares stories of the events and lunches he attended. In one he explains how Carol Vorderman ended up at the Wales Office but was initially refused entry. Read the biggest stories in Wales first by signing up to our daily newsletter here.

Writing about the event, on St David’s Day in 2019, he said: “St David’s Day ‘General Debate’. It sounds grand but we get squeezed into a couple of spare hours on a one-line whip Thursday so it’s hardly a sell-out. However, I get to ‘open’ for the Government and TC ‘closes’. It went quite well, and I think I have just about perfected‘ authoritative’ with ‘affable’ for occasions like this. Had to slip away to the No. 10 reception where (despite chaotic build-up!) Boris gave a spot-on speech full of humour and optimism.

“There was a spattering of the well-known including bizarrely Carol Vorderman, who is no friend of ours. The explanation (rumour) was that she was fronting up the kids’ charity who were guests of honour.

“Given her antipathy for politicians generally, and ours in particular, she seemed remarkably comfortable accepting our hospitality. For some reason she had mistakenly wandered into the Wales Office on her way to No. 10, but Eric the security guy hadn’t recognised her so summoned Jack Sellers (my Wales Office SpAd) down from upstairs to vouch for her”.”
