Central Florida rain chances higher as September begins

Rain chances are higher as the wind shifts from the south across Central Florida on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne.

“Locally heavy rain is forecast with amounts up to 3 inches possible in a short time,” the NWS stated in its forecast. “The best chance for this to occur will be south and east of Orlando. Slow down during heavy rain to prevent hydroplaning and do not drive where water covers the road.”

Heavy rainfall will be the primary storm concern inland where drier air could mix with the sea breeze lining up with southeasterly flow, developing bands of
storms and heavy showers.

Regionwide, 1-2 inches could be in store with higher totals on the coast.

Temperatures, though, are lower with highs in the upper 80s on the coast and low 90s inland, and overnight lows in the mid- to upper lower 70s. Peak heat index will be in the upper 90s to 100.

A moderate risk of rip currents is active beachside.

Monday rain chances remain high near 70% across Central Florida.

“Widespread rainfall amounts to around 1″ and locally high amounts to 2″ stay on the menu,” forecasters said. “Temperatures creep back up just a bit back
to the U80-L90s, but if another storm cluster shows up offshore then cloud cover could knock them back down again.”

Rain chances continue to climb by midweek.
