Update: The National Weather Service, shortly before noon, expanded its winter weather advisory to include Kansas City’s Northland. The weather service added Leavenworth, Wyandotte, Macon, Platte, Clay, Ray, Carroll and Chariton counties to the advisory.

The chance of snow in the Kansas City area increased significantly overnight, with up to a few inches now possible, according to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service.

The weather service expanded a winter weather advisory overnight to include the southern part of the metro, including Lenexa, Shawnee, Overland Park, Olathe, Independence and parts of Kansas City south of Interstate 70. The snow is from a winter storm system pushing across the southern part of the United States.

Shortly before noon, the weather service expanded the advisory again, adding Kansas City’s Northland. The weather service now includes Platte City, Weatherby Lake, Excelsior Springs, Gladstone, Riverside, Liberty, Parkville, Leavenworth, Kansas City, Kansas, Weston, Lansing, Kearney and Fort Leavenworth to the advisory.

The advisory is in effect from 5 p.m. Thursday to 9 a.m. Friday.

According to the advisory, mixed precipitation is expected, with snow accumulations up to two inches. Some areas could see as much as three inches of snow.

“Mode trends have been increasing snow totals as we near the event,” the weather service said in its forecast discussion. “I would not be surprised if areas along I-70 see pockets of 2-3 inch snowfalls.”

There also could be a few patches of freezing drizzle, although those chances have been decreasing.

“Plan on slippery road conditions,” the weather service said. “The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes.”

Drivers should exercise caution, reduce speed, and allow extra time for travel.
