Christopher Carini, Hempstead, L.I., councilman and former NYPD cop, dies suddenly at 49

Hempstead, L.I., councilman and former NYPD officer Christopher Carini died suddenly at 49, town officials announced Monday.

No cause of death was announced. Carini represented Hempstead’s 5th District in the Town Council.

“It is with an immense and deep sadness that today I share news of the tragic passing of our friend, Hempstead Town Councilman Christopher Carini,” Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin wrote in a Facebook post. “Councilman Carini was a dedicated public servant whose commitment to the communities he represented was unwavering.”

Before joining the body as a Republican, Carini served 22 years in the NYPD, MTA Police Department and Port Authority Police Department, according to his bio.

On Long Island, he was vice president of the Wantagh-Seaford Homeowners’ Association and director of the Wantagh-Seaford Homeowners’ Neighborhood Watch Committee.

“The Town of Hempstead and its residents have suffered a great loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time,” Clavin wrote.

Carini was consistently active in the Hempstead and law enforcement communities. He was on the executive board of the Port Authority police union and represented hundreds of officers in bargaining meetings.

In 2012, Carini was involved in the local cleanup after Superstorm Sandy and helped coordinate efforts at various levels, from the federal to the individual homeowners in Hempstead.

Seven years later, he ran for the town council seat against Lora Webster, a Democrat, and won. He retained the seat four years later in 2023.

“I am an experienced civic association leader, a community advocate who has gotten results to improve our communities and make them safer,” he told Patch while campaigning for office.

Carini’s death was mourned by both his fellow Republican legislators and his Democratic colleagues on Monday.

“When I met Chris on the campaign trail last summer and began working with him to serve our mutual constituents, we bonded over a shared passion for travel youth baseball,” Democrat Seth Koslow told the Long Island Press. “We are all devastated to learn of his sudden passing.”

Carini is survived by his wife, Danielle, and their children, Ava and Joey.
