City, NYSEG crews respond to gas leak in Oneonta

Jul. 25—Oneonta fire crews and NYSEG responded to a gas leak at a residence in the town of Oneonta Thursday, July 25.

Oneonta Fire Chief Brian Knapp said that the firefighters were dispatched at 12:32 p.m. to respond to a report of a gas leak at 418 Chestnut St.

Building manager Frank Fisher said the inside of the building was deemed safe to enter around 2 p.m. He said he was waiting for NYSEG to complete repairs.

Fisher said that a driver in the side parking lot of 420 Chestnut St. lost control of the vehicle’s brakes and hit into the gas meter on the side of 418 Chestnut St.

A NYSEG technician working on the leak, who declined to give his name, said that the fire department came, shut off the gas and checked the inside of the house.

The technician confirmed that the leak was cause by a vehicle in the parking lot.

He said NYSEG arrived at the scene immediately after and began working on the piping, which he said was “nothing major.”

By 3 p.m., repairs were nearly complete, he said.

It’s unclear whether anyone was inside the building while the gas leak was happening or whether anyone sought medical attention as a result of the leak.

The gas leak was a reminder of the last major leak in the town of Oneonta which occurred one block away at 18 Richards Ave. on Dec. 9, 2023.

The gas leak, caused by a gunshot, led to a fatal house explosion.

Investigating officials concluded that the resident, 60-year-old Desmond D. Moan, fired the gun that ignited the blast and died in the explosion.

Eighteen houses were affected by the blast, which displaced 26 adults and six children.

NYSEG later did a survey of the area and deemed the mains, services and facilities to be safe.
