Clifton hires communications manager to improve sharing of information with residents

CLIFTON — On Tuesday night, City Manager Nick Villano will formally introduce the city’s new communications manager, Margaret Morse, during the council meeting.

Morse’s first day on the job was Monday. The city kept its selection of Morse under wraps for weeks after her hiring. Her exact salary is unclear, but she will be paid between $80,000 and $100,000 per year.

For months, the city was searching for a suitable candidate after the position was created. It was heavily promoted by council candidate Chris D’Amato when he ran unsuccessfully in 2022.

D’Amato was later appointed to fill the seat of the late Councilwoman Lauren Murphy after her death last January because he finished in eighth place. D’Amato was elected in November to complete what is left of Murphy’s term, defeating three challengers, and all the while he pressed for a communications manager.

“I fought very hard to get this position budgeted for and approved,” D’Amato said.

The hope is for the communications manager to provide better dissemination of information, especially about issues that directly affect city residents, he said.

Items such as road closings and changes in garbage collection will be posted on the city’s website and on social media.

“The right person in this role will be a game changer for Clifton,” D’Amato said. “I look forward to meeting her and seeing what she brings to the table.”

Before coming to Clifton, Morse worked at Bruno Associates of Clifton as director of grant consulting and public relations, joining the firm in January 2022. Previously, she worked as a research associate at Millennium Strategies, LLC. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kentucky and a master’s in public administration with a focus on public management from Kean University.

Morse was instructed by Villano not to make any statement until after her introduction Tuesday night.

“A statement will be issued at that time,” Villano said.
