Cocaine dealer sobs as she is jailed and asks judge ‘What about my kids?’

A drug dealer who was found to be selling cocaine sobbed as she was jailed and asked a judge “What about my kids?”. She attempted to claim she had been manipulated by an ex boyfriend but she was said to have played a leading role in the enterprise.

Ami Wheeler, 32, was discovered after police spotted a drug deal taking place at her home in Church Village, near Pontypridd, on October 14 last year. Officers saw a man approaching the house and another man passed an item to him.

A sentencing hearing at Newport Crown Court on Thursday heard the man who purchased the drugs was stopped and found in possession of three snap bags of white powder. The purity of the drugs was 81% and had a value of £90.

Prosecutor Martha Smith-Higgins said police went back to Wheeler’s home and arrested her and a man. She was found in possession of £245 in cash and a mobile phone which contained messages linked to the sale of cocaine and crack cocaine.

One customer messaged the defendant to ask if they could pay later, and Wheeler referred to him owing her £4,000. There were messages complaining about the quality of crack cocaine, customers asking to purchase a “t-shirt” of cocaine. Another customer asked if they could pay their £5,000 debt and purchase cocaine, and the defendant told another customer she owed her upstream supplier £4,000. There were also tick lists on the phone.

Wheeler, of Maindy Court, later pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of crack cocaine and cocaine. The court heard she had three previous convictions for offences of drink driving and drug driving.

In mitigation, Matthew Comer said his client had been the victim of domestic abuse, for which her former partner was sentenced to eight months imprisonment. The barrister said the defendant had got back together with her boyfriend and it was he who had “manipulated” her into selling drugs. He said Wheeler had a cocaine habit and any profits made went to funding her addiction.

Sentencing, Recorder David Warner said: “You were not working under (your ex partner) or under his control. You were instrumental in the dealing.” Wheeler sobbed as she was sentenced to three years imprisonment and there were cries from the public gallery. She appealed to the judge and said: “What about my kids?” She was then taken to the cells as the hearing came to a close.
