Colchester sewer project to impact traffic on West Lakeshore Drive: Here are the details

Colchester is set to begin a sewer project that will impact traffic on West Lakeshore Drive. According to a community announcement, the project involves the installation of a sewer pump station near The Moorings. The road will remain open, but lane closures may occur when necessary. Four flaggers and one traffic control coordinator will manage traffic flow during construction.

The project will unfold in several phases, including pile driving, excavation, installation of a precast pump station, and removal of sheet piles and bracing. Intermittent flagging will be required to facilitate the movement of trucks and equipment in and out of the work area.

How the work will happen

The first phase, pile driving, started Feb. 24 and will take place over three to five weekdays. During this phase, traffic will be stopped in both directions for up to 10 minutes to pick up each sheet pile or corner joiner. Following this, traffic will alternate to one-way flow for up to 25 minutes while driving each sheet pile to a depth of 10 feet. Afterward, traffic will return to two-way flow for 15 to 30 minutes as the piles are driven deeper.

The second phase involves the installation of four sections of precast concrete, which will take one to two days. This will require alternating one-way traffic for up to 20 minutes to unload each section.

The final phase includes the removal of 24 pieces of sheet pile and bracing. Traffic will be stopped for up to 10 minutes for each piece as it is unthreaded and pulled from the ground. Additionally, there will be four periods of alternating one-way traffic for up to 30 minutes to load the materials onto trailers for removal.

Construction will generally occur from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The town aims to complete the sheet pile removal by April 13. No lane closures will take place on March 3 or March 4 due to Town Meeting Day. Residents are advised to seek alternative routes and anticipate delays during this period. More information is available at the town’s website.
