City officials are extending the hours of an emergency refuge center as “feel like” temperatures Thursday morning remained dangerously low.

The shelter, located in the Corpus Christi Natatorium Gym at 3202 Cabaniss Parkway, had originally been scheduled to close late Thursday morning.

The refuge will now be available all day Thursday into noon Friday, according to a message by City Manager Peter Zanoni to the Caller-Times.

“While our general practice is to open the City ERC based on absolute temperatures, given that the ‘feels like’ temperatures for tomorrow early morning will be below 32° for several hours, we will keep the ERC operational through today and until noon on Friday,” he wrote.

The refuge center served 91 people overnight Wednesday into Thursday, Zanoni wrote, while 45 people visited dayside warming centers Wednesday.

Both the emergency refuge center and daytime warming centers are free and open to the public.

Highs Thursday were forecast to only reach the 40s, with wind remaining at moderately high speeds of 15 to 20 mph, according to a message posted on social media by the local office of the National Weather Service.

Overnight Thursday into Friday is expected to drop to the upper 30s, meteorologists wrote, with the chance of rain building as high as 60% for both Friday and Saturday.

According to predictions shown in the NWS graphic, the cold will continue in Corpus Christi Friday and Saturday before finally rising Sunday.

Friday is expected to offer highs only to the 40s. Temperatures could dip between the lower 30s and upper 40s overnight Friday into Saturday, the NWS social media post shows.

Saturday shows a similar forecast, with temperatures hitting only as high as the 40s, according to meteorologists.

Temperatures will finally rise to the 60s and 70s Sunday, with Monday projected to top out in the mid-70s to mid-80s, the graphic shows.
